What is tabExtend, and What Can it Do?

tabExtend is a browser extension that lets you manage your tabs effortlessly. It sits in your browser tab and gives you an overview of all your saved websites and the ones you can save from the open tabs. You can then organize these websites into different groups and categories such that they are easy to find.

For instance, you can assort the different kinds of websites you visit in a day — sports, news, social media, etc. — into separate groups. Likewise, you can arrange the websites you need to access at work and home into different groups and put them together under separate categories.

Besides websites, tabExtend also allows you to save text snippets that you come across on different websites. Similarly, you can save blogs to a dedicated read-later category to read them at a later time. If you’d like to create notes/to-dos along the way, tabExtend offers a quick-access toolbar to help you with the same. All your saved websites and text snippets reside under personalized groups on your account, and you can access them anytime on any of your devices.

How Does tabExtend Work?

tabExtend is a browser extension that works with all Chromium-based browsers. So, you can use it on Brave, Google Chrome, Edge, Vivaldi, etc.

Once you enable the extension on your preferred browser of choice, it presents you with a default tabExtend page every time you open a new tab in the browser. If you’re using the extension for the first time, you get a blank page with no entries. However, as you populate it with different groups that hold websites, text snippets, and notes/to-dos and organize these groups into categories, tabExtend starts showing an overview of all your entries when you open a new tab.

Now, when you want to open your saved items, you’ve got two options: you can choose to either open them individually or open an entire group in one click.

Essentially, the tabExtend page includes four elements:

1. Active tab menu: Offers a quick-access menu to save or close all open tabs in the window at once.
2. Active tab list: Shows all open tabs in the current window.
3. Categories: Shows all your categories, i.e., all the different groups you have created.
4. Groups: Holds all your saved tabs, text snippets, and notes/to-dos.

In addition, there’s also a fifth element, a three-dot menu button, that gives you access to the search functionality along with the settings for menu and account.

As we mentioned in the previous section, tabExtend allows you to access your saved websites, text snippets, notes/to-dos on your mobile devices as well, so you can view them on the go. In this regard, at the time of writing this, tabExtend is employing PWA (Progressive Web Application) to offer this functionality. As you’d expect, this doesn’t have the best user experience and is limited in terms of features. However, the company seems to be working on native mobile apps for tabExtend, which should facilitate a seamless experience.

How to Use tabExtend

With tabExtend’s basics out of the way, it’s time to see how you can use it effectively in your workflow.

1. Download the tabExtend extension on your browser and enable it. Make sure you get an overview page when you open a new browser tab.
2. Open your browser and browse the internet, like you usually do.
3. When you want to save a website, open a new browser tab to get to the tabExtend page.
4. Hover over the left sidebar to see all the tabs currently open in your browser.
5. To save the websites listed under active tabs, you can take two approaches: you can drag & drop the websites from the left sidebar to the right-hand section or click on the downward-facing arrow and select an option from save, move, or delete accordingly.

Items you add on the right-hand section live under categories. You can either work with the pre-listed categories or modify them by clicking on the three-dot menu from the top-right of the page and selecting Edit categories. Similarly, you can also create new groups from this menu and add websites, text snippets, notes/to-dos to them.

1. To save text snippets from articles, highlight the text you want to save and right-click on it.
2. Hover over tabExtend from the menu and either select Add selection to group: to add items to your existing groups, or select Close site and save to: to choose one of the categories or create a new group.

Talking about creating notes/to-dos, with tabExtend, you can easily add notes or to-dos to your groups using the toolbar.

1. Hover over the group you want to add notes/to-dos to and click on the rectangular box that appears inside the group.
2. Start typing the note/to-do you want to add.
3. By default, it saves your entries as notes. However, if you’d like to turn them into to-dos, click on the to-do icon from the toolbar that appears at the bottom. From here, you can also change the background color for your notes/to-dos and add emojis.

As you start using tabExtend to manage your browser data and become entirely dependent on it, your tabExtend space can get crowded with website links, text snippets, and notes/to-dos. In some cases, this can make it harder to find items from the saved entries. To deal with this, tabExtend offers quick search functionality, which lets you find items from your saved entries instantly. You can access search by clicking on the search icon next to the three-dot menu on the top-right or using the command + K or windows + K shortcut.

Aside from functionality, tabExtend also lets you change certain aspects of your space. So, you can add emojis to your group names for better identification, change the position of groups to sort them to your preference, and resize the size of groups to fit more groups on the screen. Moreover, the extension even offers you the option to change the theme, enable/disable the sound effect, and export your data.

In addition to accessing your saved websites and other items on your computer, you can also view them on your mobile device. However, as we already mentioned, the functionality is restricted since it’s currently available as a PWA.

1. Open Chrome and visit tabExtend.
2. Sign in to tabExtend with your login credentials.

On iOS

1. Open Safari to Chrome and visit tabExtend.
