GPT-3, or generative pre-trained transformer, is one of the most sophisticated language models right now. It is developed by OpenAI and is a successor to their previous model, GPT-2. The new model utilizes deep learning — a part of the machine learning method based on artificial neural networks — to generate human-like text. What separates it from GPT-2 is that it weighs in at 175 billion parameters — compared to 1.5 billion on GPT-2. This massive increase in parameters makes GPT-3 more accurate and effective at generating texts that are (somewhat) indistinguishable from their human-written counterpart.

However, this is not the first time that OpenAI has come up with an AI-backed language model. And their previous release, GPT-2, was a reasonable success, which found its applications across different domains — the game Dungeon AI being a good example. But, like most language models, it also had some shortcomings. Chief of these is the lack of coherency encountered after a couple of paragraphs while generating a passage, which rendered the text discernible and easily identifiable as non-human sounding. And also the inability to generate long-tail blog posts.

What is GPT-3?

With its latest release (GPT-3), though, OpenAI has managed to address most of the shortcomings of GPT-2. As mentioned initially, the new model weighs in at 175 billion parameters, which makes it the largest NLP (Natural Language Processing) transformer to date. In fact, not just that, with this rise in parameters, GPT-3 also overtakes both GPT-2 and Microsoft Research’s Turing-NLG (Natural Language Generation) — gaining a colossal lead over the latter, which used to be the biggest language model until GPT-3 happened. As a result, GPT-3 lends support for comprehensive writing with increased effectiveness and efficiency, making it hard to distinguish a GPT-3 generated writing from that of a human copywriter.

That said, while GPT-3 manages to impress on so many fronts, it is still far from passing the Turing test. [Turing test, for the uninitiated, is a test named after Alan Turing. It is carried out on Artificial Intelligence systems to determine their human-ness, i.e., to find out if they can think like human beings.] The reason for this is the fact that GPT-3 gets tricked when subjected to non-sensical queries. In such instances, rather than pointing out the absurdity of the query, the system tries to find and respond with an earnest answer.

Unlike GPT-2, which faced impediments initially but was later made available to the public, OpenAI is limiting access to its new model and only offering it to experimenters via API (application programming interface) access. Apparently, this is to prevent the misuse of the model in spreading disinformation and fake news, among other questionable use cases. By taking the API approach, the control now lies in the authorizing body that gets to decide who can experiment with GPT-3 and for what purpose. And it is only after these requests are approved that the experimenters get to use the model for their application.

Now that it’s been a while since GPT-3 is out, and the organization is offering GPT-3 API access to experimenters, some have managed to capitalize on the language model and showcased some interesting use cases. As a result, we have several applications using the new language model to implement better and more efficient ways of doing things like generating code and writing copywriting materials such as passages, product descriptions, article headlines, and ad copies, among other things that can be very useful for content marketers.

3. CopyAI

CopyAI covers a wide range of copywriting use cases with its comprehensive set of functionalities. It uses GPT-3, similar to other tools in the list, but takes a very straightforward approach to creating copies for different marketing materials. You can use the platform to create digital ad copies (for Facebook, Google, and Linkedin), social media content (captions), website copy (hero text, subheaders, and meta descriptions), eCommerce copy (product descriptions and product benefits), blog content, and sales copies.

4. Shortly AI

While most of the GPT-3 tools in this list act like swiss army knives with lots of different tools and templates, Shortly AI aims to do one thing and do it better than everyone else. Shortly AI promises to cure copywriters and bloggers of writing blocks. Be it a complicated blog post or a crime thriller novel, Shortly can help you write with just a click. The idea here is to start writing the article/novel and use AI to complete the sentence or a paragraph. In our testing so far, we saw Shortly AI do a stunning job at this. Quite clearly, it’s by far the best AI writer for long-form content.

Shortly’s interface is like a blank canvas and can be used to write anything. The right side is where you write, and the left sidebar has some basic settings/inputs to help AI understand what you are trying to write. You can even stop the AI from reading some parts of the text if you think it’s getting stuck in some patterns. This is how you have (almost) complete control over what the AI writes for you. And the best part? You can “instruct” the AI to help you out with anything using normal conversational commands. Pricing is also very simple, as its interface. There is just one plan available for Shortly. You can choose either Annual ($24.99 per month) or Monthly ($39.99 per month). There’s a 3-day trial if you prefer to try before you pay.

Update: As of June 2021, Shortly has been acquired by Jasper. While Shortly continues to exist as a separate entity, we suggest you consider going for Jasper since Shortly won’t be actively developed.
